The Blaine County Fair kicks off today in Carey with the 4-H horse show starting at 8 a.m. at the Carey Rodeo Arena. The fair lasts eight days, so there are lots of other fun events to attend.
Animal shows and judging, a petting zoo, rodeo action, commercial exhibits and lots of good fair food are some of the things attendees can enjoy. A complete fair schedule is available at www.blainecountyfair.com.
Longtime Blaine County residents Juan and Verla Goitiandia have been named 2013 fair grand marshals. A biography available at the fair website describes the couple as “among Blaine County’s best.”
Juan Goitiandia is originally from the Spanish province of Biscay. He came to Blaine County at age 17 to work as a shepherd. After that, he went to work for Sun Valley Co., where he has been employed for 48 years. He is an avid trap shooter, having won numerous titles over the years in association with local gun clubs.
Juan married Blaine County fourth-generation native Verla Worthington in 1966. The couple raised three sons and now have four granddaughters.
Verla Goitiandia is well known for her dedication to the 4-H program, having served 30 years as a member and leader. She serves on the Blaine County Heritage Board and the Blaine County Museum Board. She is active with the annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival and worked in the lunch program for 20 years at Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum.

A complete fair schedule is available at the fair website at www.blainecountyfair.com.

Progressive team roping is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.
An ATV and Motorcycle Rodeo is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8. Events include barrel racing, a wheelie contest, a pickup race and balloon popping.
A Fall Rodeo is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9. The show will feature a wild cow race, wild cow milking, heifer riding and barrel racing.
A family fun day will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, and will include dancing, music, a bouncy house, a petting zoo, a scavenger hunt, crafts and arts sales, and a mechanical bull. The 4H Market Animal Sale will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10.
