5 days on easy street

The 24th annual Sun Valley Jazz Jamboree concluded on Sunday its five-day gig complete with 40 bands. An estimated 5,000 festival-goers from all 50 states, Canada and other foreign countries attended the festival. This year’s event was dedicated to longtime supporter Earl Holding, the Sun Valley Co. owner who died earlier this year. Venues including the Continental Room, Limelight Room, River Run Lodge, Duchin Room, Lodge Dining Room and the Indoor Ice Rink were often packed full of jazz aficionados. “We broadened what we offered this year by blending more contemporary jazz with big-band genre thereby, providing a more varied jamboree,” said Carol Loehr, event director. Clockwise from top, the Jazz Jamboree honored Meschiya Lake as the 2013 Great Lady of Jazz. Lake recently received the Big Easy Female Vocalist of the Year Award in New Orleans for the second straight year. She performed tirelessly all weekend with her band Dem Lil’ Big Horns. Dancing is perennially a favorite aspect of the festival, with swing dancing being perhaps the favorite form. The Lindy Hop, Balboa and Jitterbug were some of the more popular dances. Tom Rigney from Tom Rigney & Flambeau, a California-based group, brought a blend of Cajun and zydeco to the jazz scene. Local favorite and New York legend Paul Tillotson played solo and with his trio at several venues during the jamboree. Flip Oakes continues to anchor Titan Hot Seven, one of the favorite bands, with his exemplary trumpet playing.
