What do cancer, depression, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, happiness, longevity, strength and peace have in common? According to naturopath Dr. James Rouse, it’s inflammation.
“We tend to think of inflammation in the most old-school traditional sense, which is acute inflammation—the kind of inflammation that is associated with banging your knee, where there is pain and swelling immediately following the accident,” Rouse said. “Chronic inflammation is far more subtle and insidious and much more likely to have much more serious consequences with our health. Chronic inflammation can lead to a wide variety of health challenges.”
There are several tests that can be helpful in diagnosing chronic inflammation including: elevated high sensitivity C-reactive protein SED rate and high homocysteine elevated blood glucose levels.
Rouse will speak about the good and bad aspects of inflammation as a guest of the Sun Valley Wellness Institute in a presentation called “Think-Eat-Move: A simple philosophy for reclaiming optimum wellness and reducing inflammation within our bodies and ultimately the world,” on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Sun Valley Inn.
Rouse is a renowned naturopathic doctor and expert in functional and lifestyle medicine. He is the author of nine books and is host and founder of Optimum Wellness Media. He has coached Fortune 50 and 500 companies, Major League Baseball and NFL teams, and several branches of the U.S. government. He has shared his message to audiences in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
“… cancer, depression, heart disease,
Alzheimer’s disease all have a direct link to
inflammation. Happiness, longevity, strength and peace do as well.”

According to Rouse, the solution to preventing disease can be created by engaging simple daily practices and principles that can not only shift one’s inflammatory chemistry, but can help to transform one’s body—even if the disease is genetic.
“There is growing evidence that although our genetics can play a role as to whether or not ‘we’ develop inflammation—the vast majority of our risk for contracting/developing chronic inflammation comes from environmental factors,” he said.
The factors, he said, include “stress, diet, exercise, our attitude and outlook on ourselves and life—gratefully, the majority of causal factors are things that we can control and place in our favor.”
In his presentation, Rouse will teach clinically proven techniques he has used in treating some 5,000 patients, teaching as a member of the faculty of the Institute of Functional Medicine and keeping his own life thriving as a former sponsored Ironman competitor.
Attendees will discover the tools, practices and everyday rituals Rouse says have been clinically proven to enhance the experience of living—along with the secret to bringing world-class motivation and willpower to actualize their most inspiring goals. That includes tapping into an inner genius, he says.
“Getting your ‘genius on’ is all about claiming the anti-inflammatory power that comes with living life with greater purpose, serving others with your gifts and talents, carrying an optimistic attitude and outlook and courageously choosing to shine your ‘love light’ for the whole world to see is expressing genius, and each of these traits has been shown to decrease both test markers for inflammation and decrease our risk for becoming chronically inflammed in the first place.”
All attendees will receive an anti-inflammatory and thriving “care package,” including a four-week eating and recipe plan, including delicious, nutritious goodies.
Rouse was a speaker at the 2013 Sun Valley Wellness Festival.
