Search continues for missing woman

Monument officials requesting military drone aircraft

    More than a month after her disappearance, the search continues for a Boise woman missing at the Craters of the Moon National Monument east of Carey.
    The Associated Press reported this week that monument officials have requested the use of an unmanned military drone to help find 63-year-old Joe Elliot-Blakeslee, who has been missing since Sept. 19. The AP reported that use of the drone would require approval first from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and then from the U.S. Department of Defense.
    Boise television station KTVB reported that monument officials hope that the aircraft could take aerial photographs of the area where Elliot-Blakeslee went missing in hopes that evidence of her whereabouts might be detected.
    A massive search of the area, including caves in the rugged lava flows, has thus far not been able to locate the woman. Planes and helicopters have also been used.
    Elliot-Blakeslee was believed to have been on a one-day hiking trip in a remote area of the monument. Her hiking companion, 69-year-old Amy Linkert, was found dead when a search was started on Sept. 25. Butte County officials reported that Linkert died of exposure.
