Hailey girls capture Minico cross country meet

Ready for district finals

In a winning tune-up for next week’s Great Basin Conference state-qualifying meet, the Wood River High School girls’ cross country team won Wednesday’s Minico Invitational meet at Lake Walcott by a 32-46 margin over the Twin Falls Bruins.

A solid 3-4-5 finish by seniors Haley Montgomery (20:47), Janel Passey (20:50) and Mariah Stout (21:01) gave Wood River 12 points, then Amy Cantrell’s seventh place (21:40) and Amanda Passey’s 13th place (22:24) added 20 points giving the Wolverines a 32-point total.

In third place on a cool fall day for running was reigning GBC district girls’ team champion Jerome with 58 points.

The Wolverines, with 11 girls running in the field of 71 from the six GBC schools, showed they are ready for the final divisional footrace Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. at Burley Golf Course. That race will qualify the top three teams for the State 4A 3.1-miler at Freeman Park in Idaho Falls Saturday, Nov. 2.

Last year at Sun Valley Resort’s White Clouds Golf Course trail, the Jerome Tiger girls won the district title with 22 points over Twin Falls (40) and third-place Wood River (66). Wednesday’s Minico Invitational winner, Jerome senior Kayla Green (20:23), was second in last year’s district meet.

“Many of our runners had personal-best times,” said Wood River coach Monte Brothwell, speaking on behalf of Hailey co-coaches Heather Miller and Kari Haugen.

The following are the Minico Invitational results for the Wood River girls. The boys’ results will be published when they become available.

In another prep cross country meet involving local runners, Tuesday’s Gooding Invitational, Community School thinclads Nate Nasvik and Nate Thomas cracked the top 10 of the boys’ 3.1-mile race. The 4th District 2A footrace qualifying runners for state is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23 back at Gooding Golf Course.
