Students embrace ‘1984’

Play to be staged tonight and Saturday

“1984” is a story of forbidden love, secrecy and the fight for freedom.
The lovers Julia and Winston, created by George Orwell, live in a world where Big Brother is always watching, and privacy or the mere idea of being alone would be something to kill for.
Wood River High School Drama Department and “1984” director Karl Nordstrom said he decided to put on the play over the summer as the conflict of the National Security Administration leaks raged on, leading him to pick up the classic novel.
There are two shows remaining, tonight at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. in the Wood River High School Performing Arts Center in Hailey.
The cast consists of high school students Caroline Scarbrough, Chase Hutchinson, Drake Arial, Hayden Mann, Logan Mckenzie, Riley Kilmartnschmidt, Sadera Shultz, Taylor Lenane and Wyatt Caccia.
Hutchinson said the ending, no spoiler here, left him bewildered by a “society (that) could drive it to this point.”
Caccia brought up how he believes that this play would be very relatable for the audience considering our current times. Many in the group opined that social media is driving a loss of privacy and gravitate away from our real values.
Trust issues abound within this story, as well as thrills, actions and danger.
