Cook up a storm with Brian Boitano

Benefit event coming Aug. 22 to resort

By JEFF CORDES
Express Staff Writer

Four years ago, 1988 Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano explained the rationale behind his new Food Network television series to icenetwork.com.
He said his two passions in life were figure skating and food, and the new TV series that invited viewers into his San Francisco kitchen was the second dream job in his life.
Boitano, 49, is coming to Sun Valley this month not to perform as headliner in the Sun Valley Ice Show, but to appear in a fund-raising event for the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club set for Thursday, Aug. 22.
Tickets go on sale today, Wednesday, Aug. 7 for the “Cook with Brian Boitano,” evening of food and entertainment, to be held in two weeks at a “surprise venue.”
Those attending Aug. 22 will receive a free copy of his book, a book title that is also the title of his TV show—“What Would Brian Boitano Make?”
According to a SVFSC press release, “Boitano has traveled all over the world for skating competitions, and he is fascinated with other cultures and their cuisine. He now finds the same deep fulfillment in cooking and entertaining that he once found in skating.
“His adventures abroad influence his own style of cooking, as does his Italian heritage, where great food has always been a key part of any gathering. Some of Boitano’s favorite food memories revolve around family get-togethers, and his cookbook includes personal vignettes and dishes inspired by memorable family recipes.”
Boitano, from Sunnyvale, Ca., captured the first of his four consecutive U.S. national titles in 1985. At the 1982 nationals, he became the first U.S. skater to land a triple Axel.
He won two world championships (1986 and 1988) and the Olympic gold medal in 1988. Boitano has won more professional titles than any competitor in the history of sport. He was inducted into both the World and U.S. Figure Skating Halls of Fame in 1996.
VIP tickets for $200 per person include private cocktails with Boitano at 5 p.m. Aug. 22 prior to the program. General tickets for $100 per person include the cooking demonstration, hors d’oeuvres and signature cocktail.
