Family fun at Blaine County Fair

Rodeos and more at Carey


    You can find just about everything to have fun as a family during this week’s Blaine County Fair in Carey.
    That includes rodeos of all kinds, a team roping event, an ATV and motorcycle competition, Saturday’s Family Fun Day activities and, of course, the Market Animal Sale.
    Fair grand marshals overseeing many events are Juan and Verla Goitiandia, who have been married 47 years and have raised three sons and now have four grand-daughters.
    Those attending will enjoy animal shows and judging, a petting zoo, commercial exhibits and lots of good fair food.
    The exhibit building opens at 9 a.m. daily from Thursday, Aug. 8 through the final fair day of Saturday, Aug. 10. Be sure to attend the 4-H luncheon Saturday at noon.
    A fair schedule is available at blainecountyfair.com. Here are highlights of special events:
    l Wednesday, Aug. 7: Progressive team roping at 6 p.m. at Carey Rodeo Arena adjacent to the fairgrounds. Contact Danny Simpson at 720-9590.
    l Thursday, Aug. 8: ATV and Motorcycle Rodeo at 8 p.m. in the arena. Events include barrel racing, a wheelie contest, pickup race and two-person balloon popping. Age divisions are 9-14 and 15-and-up. You can enter for $5. And admission is $5 at the gate.

    l Friday, Aug. 9: The Fall Rodeo starts at 8 p.m., with sign-ups at 7 p.m. The popular show features a wild cow race for three-person teams, wild cow milking for two-person teams, heifer riding and barrel racing. Entry fee is $15. And admission is $5 at the gate, with kids 8-and-under free.
    l Saturday, Aug. 10: Family Fun Day from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. includes dancing, music, a bouncy house, a petting zoo, a scavenger hunt, crafts and arts sales, and a mechanical bull.
    The Market Animal Sale begins at 1:30 p.m.
    As a grand finale, the Little Kids Rodeo is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Designed for youngsters ages 8-13, the fun rodeo includes sheep riding, barrel racing, calf riding, goat tying and pole bending. Classes are 8-and-under, 9-11 and 12-13. Fee is $5 per event, and admission fee is $5 for adults, free for 13-under.
