Not your typical family get-together

In Challis, Brauns make reunions fun

By JENNIFER LIEBRUM
Express Staff Writer

Muzzy Braun is to Idaho what Willie Nelson is to Texas.
Braun is the elder statesman of a lyrical family tree, but just because his kids have grown out of their Idaho musical britches doesn’t mean they disregard their roots, or that dad has retired the spotlight.
The longtime musician from Challis held court last week at Redfish Lake Lodge, belting out his original songs of the Gem State and stirring up nostalgia with long-held hits.
And this weekend, as they have for the nine years, his extended family has come back from points as far as Texas and near as Boise to get grounded in Challis for a weekend. The annual Braun Brothers Reunion will be held Thursday, Aug. 8, through Saturday, Aug. 10.
In addition to blood kin Cindy Braun, Reckless Kelly and Micky and the Motorcars, special guests to the party include old-school Texas honky tonk Dale Watson, Redd Volkaert and cowgirl sweetheart Suzy Bogguss.
Bringing red-dirt Americana influence are Cody Canada & The Departed, Turnpike Troubadours and Randy Rogers Band.
Tickets are available at the gate or online at www.braunbrothersreunion.com and can be bought for a night or all three (only $105.95.). Children under 5 get in free, kids 6-12 get in for $15.
Camping spots are available. Visitors can also stay at the Challis Golf Course, hot springs or in town.
