The Ketchum Police Department is investigating a fatality that occurred Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Fourth and Main streets downtown.
Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey said a woman, age 40-50, was killed in a traffic accident on Fourth Street at approximately 4 p.m. Ramsey said preliminary information suggests the victim was riding a bicycle in a bike lane on Fourth Street, started to “wobble,” and then fell into a lane of traffic. She was then run over by a dump truck, he said.
“It’s a terrible tragedy for a thing like this to happen in a community where people like to enjoy bicycling around town,” Ramsey said.
The county coroner arrived at the scene after members of the Ketchum Police Department, Ketchum Fire Department and Idaho State Police. Some officials were taking measurements at the site. A bicycle was lying in a flower bed at the scene, on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Investigators said they would not release any additional information about the accident until after the family of the victim had been notified of the incident.
In 2009, the Idaho Transportation Department released statistics showing that intersection to be the “seventh most dangerous urban accident spot” in Blaine County.
