Rotarun to stage fire recovery event Saturday

Hill climb, lunch, fence raising

Rotarun Ski Area is hosting its “Feel the Burn—Heal the Burn” event Saturday, Oct. 19 for valley residents to support post-fire recovery efforts at the Hailey ski hill following the Beaver Creek Fire. The event will include a community hill climb, fundraising lunch and “fence raising.”

Board president Jesse Foster said the event will promote healthy lungs and legs as people race, run or walk up the 440-foot vertical-gain slope. He said it will also help heal the burned facility as people will attend the hike/lunch fundraiser and/or lend their hands for a ‘fence raising.’

“This is a call for help,” said Foster. “The Beaver Creek Fire caused significant damage to the facility. We need help to rebuild, so we can open this winter.”

He said Rotarun suffered losses including snow fencing, and electrical infrastructure, as well as sustaining terrain scarring from fire lines drawn during the Beaver Creek Fire. Though the lodge and lifts were saved thanks to firefighting efforts, the hometown hill is still in need of assistance to recover.

On-site registration for the Oct. 19 hill climb will be from 9 to 9:50 a.m. The fun hike starts at 10 a.m. and the hill run/race will have a ‘mass start’ at 10:30 a.m.

Event fees are $30 for a family, $20 an individual, $10 for kids ages 6-17, and free for kids 5-and-under.

Lunch will be provided starting at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 for those participating in either of the events, and will include a hamburger, drink and chips.

Volunteers will then be asked to join Rotarun board and staff for the fence building scheduled for noon the same day.

Snow fencing is critical to Rotarun’s snow retention and grooming efforts, promoting drift deposits during snow storms, and minimizing snow loss from winds, Foster said. Snow fences are planned along the ridge and west side to replace the 900 feet of snow fencing lost in the fire.

The Rotarun Ski Area, located at 25 Rodeo Drive, just 3 miles west of Hailey, is a non-profit facility with the goal of providing affordable winter recreation opportunities in the Wood River Valley.
