Cutthroat girls play for HDSC soccer title

Boys still in the hunt

     Coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroat girls (13-0-0) hosted a second-round game in the six-team High Desert Soccer Conference 3A tournament Tuesday at Sagewillow Farms in Elkhorn.

     The Cutthroats, four-time defending champs of the league tournament, squared off against No. 4-seeded Buhl (8-8-0). Buhl was 2-1 winner over Gooding Saturday in the first round of HDSC games at SunWay Soccer Complex in Twin Falls.

     Filer (10-3-1, 9-2-0) is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and could meet the Cutthroats again Thursday, Oct. 17 in the league championship game at 4:30 on the Sagewillow field.

     The conference will send its top two teams to the State 3A tournament Oct. 24 in Caldwell. Filer played No. 3 Bliss (9-4-0) on Tuesday.

     The Cutthroats will seek their 15th state tournament trip since 1996 in Thursday’s final.

     Coach Richard Whitelaw’s No. 3-seeded Community School boys (12-3-2) opened the HDSC tournament Saturday at SunWay Soccer Complex with a 5-0 win over No. 6 Declo (3-11-0).

     Goal scorers were Jay Fitzgerald (2), Roger Figge, Tom Gillespie and John Blackburn. Whitelaw’s “Man of the Match” was junior sweeper and captain Jack Swanson.

     The Cutthroat boys played Tuesday at No. 2-seeded Wendell (10-2-1). Wendell advanced 6-0 over No. 7 Filer (0-15-1) this past Saturday in Twin Falls. Defending league and State 3A champion Gooding hosted No. 4 Buhl (7-5-3) in another Tuesday semi-final game of the seven-team tournament.

     The winner of the Community School-Wendell game earned an automatic berth to the State 3A tournament Oct. 24 in Caldwell—and a date with probably No. 1-seeded Gooding (10-1-2) in Thursday’s HDSC title game, at Gooding.

     Three HDSC boys’ teams qualify for this year’s State 3A meet. If the Cutthroat boys lost at Wendell Tuesday, they have another chance to qualify in a state play-in game Thursday, Oct. 17 at 4:30 p.m., to be played away from Sun Valley.
