For the Carey Panthers High School football team, it was a night to get all of the kinks out, the mistakes corrected and the offense firing on all cylinders. For the Castleford Wolves, it was a night to forget as the visiting Wolves went home beaten easily 62-26.
Carey (3-2, 1-1 league) scored early in the first quarter and never looked back on the way to a season-best nine-touchdown night—and its first Sawtooth Conference West win. The Panthers piled up points easily over Castleford (1-5, 0-3) Friday in an 88-point, eight-man football game at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.
Junior quarterback Nate Adamson (7-for-15 passing for 198 yards, 4 TD, 90 yards rushing and 2 TD) scored the first points for the Panthers five minutes in the game on a quarterback keeper up the middle for 13 yards.
Adamson fired a strike to sophomore Joe Parke for the Panthers next score just three minutes later. It was the first of four TDs for Parke. Senior Christian Zarate (10 carries, 91 yards) added two TD runs.
“I was pleased with our offense, it's been a long time since we put up some points like we did,” Carey coach Lane Kirkland said. “It was nice there was some variety of kids scoring.”
As a team, Carey piled up 319 rushing yards (9.1 yards-per-carry average) and 517 total yards to win for the third time in four games.
The Panthers speed was what did Castleford in. The Wolves boasted a larger offensive and defensive line, but the Panthers were able to run around Castleford defenders with no difficulty.
Kirkland said, “This was quite a different game to prepare for. I knew we had more speed than they did so we spread it out a little more. I knew we needed to score more points and we did a nice job getting some long stuff.”
Carey put up five touchdowns of 28 or more yards. On defense, Parke led the team with 17 tackles and 4 assists, while senior Tori Alvarez added 14 tackles and 6 assists. Junior Matt Whitworth had 7 tackles and 3 assists, and Adamson 8 tackles and 9 assists.
Carey will now prepare for its divisional showdown against unbeaten Lighthouse Christian Academy of Twin Falls (6-0, 3-0), last year’s State 1A Division 2 runner-up. That game is Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in Twin Falls.
“Lighthouse will be a chore,” said Kirkland, “They're loaded. They have some good speed. They have a great passing game and a great running back. We’ll play more of a control game.”
