Figure skaters compete at regionals

In Tacoma, Wash.

Sun Valley Figure Skating Club skaters attending the recent regional championships were, from left, Sheldon Gentling, Joyce Chan and Katie Peters.

Three Sun Valley Figure Skating Club members traveled to Tacoma, Wash., to test their skills at two U.S. Figure Skating regional figure skating competitions Oct. 3-8.

Joyce Chan, a Community School junior, competed in the 2014 Northwest Pacific Regional Championships. That was a qualifying competition for the Sectional Championships open to skaters from Intermediate through Senior levels.

Chan placed 10th in a large, highly competitive qualifying group of 16 skaters.

Competing in theNon Qualifying Competition at the Northwest Pacific Regional Championships for Pre-Preliminary through Juvenile levels, Katie Peters placed fifth and Sheldon Gentling seventh in Preliminary level groups.

At non-qualifying levels, competitive groups are divided in to sub-groups by age. Peters is an eighth grader, and Gentling a fifth grader, at the Community School.

Coach Gia Guddat accompanied Chan. Peters was accompanied by her coach Lisa-Marie Allen, who also served as a technical specialist at Tacoma. Judy Blumberg coaches Gentling.

This year, skaters from 32 different figure skating clubs participated in the Northwest Pacific regional competitions, some traveling from as far away as Anchorage, Ak.
