Idaho Crosstoberfest on this weekend
    The 10th annual Idaho Crosstoberfest, combining two days of cyclocross races with a craft beer festival, is scheduled for Oct. 18 and 19 in the Wood River Valley.
    Cyclocross events traditionally take place in the autumn and early winter and consist of short races (usually lasting less than an hour) in which the competitors make laps on short tracks that contain challenging terrain, which varies from dirt to pavement to grass, and includes obstacles that occasionally force riders to dismount and carry their bikes.
    Crosstoberfest Idaho is the brainchild of Billy Olson, a former professional road bike racer. Hundreds of riders, racing fans and beer lovers are expected to attend this year’s event. Live music and locally grown and raised Bavarian-style food is also in the lineup.
    Event proceeds benefit Road & Dirt, a nonprofit organization promoting fun and competitive cycling events in the Wood River Valley.

Garden help offered for those in need
    The Sawtooth Botanical Garden and The Senior Connection are partnering for the third consecutive year of “Growing and Giving,” an effort to help provide fall cleanup to community members in need.
    Volunteers are needed on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m.-noon. The Senior Connection will choose eight to 10 residences where teams of volunteers, each led by a professional landscaping crew, will rake, prune and plant spring bulbs.
     Lunch will be served at the community garden after the event for all volunteers and participants. In the past, individuals, business teams and families have joined in this event to give back.

Friends of library host book and bake sale
    Friends of the Hailey Public Library are looking for book donations and baked goods as they prepare for their 26th annual Used Book and Fresh Bake Sale.
    The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 24 and 25, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Hailey National Guard Armory.
    Book donations can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, and Wednesday, Oct. 23. Items wanted are paperbacks, hardbacks, kids’ books, DVDs, videos and books on tape or CD.
    Anyone wishing to bake for the sale or help with the book sale should call 720-7395.
    The sale benefits the Hailey Public Library.  

Discuss lessons of recent wildfire
    The public is invited to join the Idaho Conservation League at the Community Library in Ketchum from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, to discuss the impacts of and lessons that can be learned from the Beaver Creek Fire, which burned more than 110,000 acres of land west of the Wood River Valley.
    Ketchum Fire Chief Mike Elle will speak, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A to better understand how the community can address the risk of fire and plan for future fire events.
    Doors open at 5:45 pm, and the presentation starts at 6. Light refreshments will be provided.
