It was an outstanding afternoon for the Wood River High School cross country team Wednesday during the Canyon Ridge High School Challenge 3.1-mile footrace at Rock Creek Park in Twin Falls.

Led by senior Haley Montgomery (20:48), the Wolverine girls placed five runners in the top eight and marched away with the varsity girls’ team championship by a 21-36 margin over the Twin Falls Bruins.

Seniors Janel Passey (21:06) and Mariah Stout (21:08) finished in nearly lock-step for second and third place among 60 varsity finishers. Stout’s time was a career-best and a time improvement of 54 seconds over her next-best time, which occurred in last October’s State 4A footrace in Lewiston.

Sophomore Amanda Passey (22:13) and freshman Amy Cantrell (22:14) placed seventh and eighth for 5 kilometers.

Wood River coaches Kari Haugen, Heather Miller and Monte Brothwell thought the runners performed well and many had personal-best times. They agreed that it wasn’t a fast course, but the weather offered perfect conditions once again.

In the 101-runner boys’ varsity race, Wood River senior Ty Reinemann (17:52) clocked a season-best time by 28 seconds to finish seventh and junior Cameron Bingham (18:40) sliced 33 seconds off his previous-best time to place 15th.

Besides 161 varsity runners, there were 158 middle school runners on the 1.55-mile course. Community School eighth-grader Henry Raff led 96 boys to the finish with an 8:29 time for the 2.5-kilometer race. Wood River Middle School sent 29 runners and the Community School Middle School entered eight.

Next up: The Community School high school team travels to Gooding Golf Course Tuesday, Oct. 15 for the Gooding Invitational, and Wood River buses to Lake Walcott near Rupert Wednesday, Oct. 16 for the Minico Invitational meet.
