WRHS volleyball picks up pace at Borah meet

Wolverines make “Round of 8” in Boise

     Coach Tim Richards and his Wood River High School Wolverines welcomed back one of their best players, junior co-captain Haley Cutler (sidelined with an ankle injury since Sept. 4), during last weekend’s 18-team Borah Invitational prep volleyball tournament in Boise.

     Unfortunately, the Wolverines have been bitten by the injury bug and another key player, senior co-captain Mary Petzke, couldn’t make the trip to Boise for the two-day tournament. She joined seniors Sadie Dawson and Sydney Thomsen on the sideline.

     All things considered, Richards felt that Wood River with its starting lineup of players all 5-6 in height did particularly well in winning four of its seven matches at the Borah meet won by Timberline of Boise over Bishop Kelly of Boise. Wood River made the quarterfinals.

     Cutler led the way with 27 kills for the tournament.

     In round-robin play, with matches determined on one game to 30 points, Wood River defeated Melba, Columbia of Nampa and Nampa Christian by respective scores of 30-16, 31-29 and 30-26. The Wolverines lost twice—to Borah of Boise 30-26 and to Mountain Home 30-29.

     Wood River gained revenge over Mountain Home in the first match of Saturday’s single elimination tournament, winning its first three-game match of the season 25-23, 16-25, 15-9.

     Hitting leaders were Cutler (8 kills) and junior co-captain Brittney Bradley (7 kills). Junior Ciceley Peavey had a very high total of 42 digs in the win.

     Eventual champion Timberline with its roster of tall players ousted Wood River 25-14, 25-14 in the “Round of 8,” while Eagle beat Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls. Timberline then defeated Eagle in the semis and Bishop Kelly in the final.

     Freshman Blair Radford (4 kills against Columbia, 9 digs against Timberline) along with ninth-grader Michelle Mason (2 kills in the Mountain Home round-robin match) and freshman McKenzie Gardipe were among the contributors.

     Richards said about his youthful squad, “At some points half of our starting lineup consisted of ninth graders.
A lot of progress was shown by the young Wolverines.”

     Wood River (8-19, 2-4 league) re-enters Great Basin Conference play this week. The Wolverines visited Burley Tuesday night and entertain Minico Thursday, Oct. 10 for their Homecoming match. Minico nipped Wood River at Rupert in four games back on Sept. 19.

     Minico’s Spartans (3-4 league) also played in the Borah tournament but lost to Boise in the “Round of 16,” while Wood River made the final eight that was dominated by 5A teams.
