Alaska Airlines adds Hailey flights

Schedule expanded for Seattle, Los Angeles routes

    Alaska Airlines is expanding its nonstop flights between Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey and the cities of Los Angeles and Seattle.
    The new schedule will add an additional week of flights to both cities next spring, as well as one more week of flights to Seattle in the fall and weekend flights to Seattle through the first three weekends in October.
    The expanded flight schedule is part of an annually negotiated air service contract between the airline and Sun Valley Resort and local nonprofit Fly Sun Valley Alliance.
    “We expect this expanded flight schedule will stimulate increased tourism during our spring ski season, as well as into the fall months with our great weather and unique signature events,” said Fly Sun Valley Alliance President Eric Seder.

    According to a news release from the organization, the expansion will add an additional 37 inbound flights and a 10 percent increase in total inbound seat capacity to Alaska’s current service to Friedman Memorial Airport.
    The 2013-14 flight schedule will be:

• Winter season, Dec. 14 to April 6: one daily flight from Seattle and Los Angeles to and from Friedman.
• 2014 summer/fall season, June 13 to Sept. 21: one daily flight between Los Angeles and Friedman. June 13 to Sept. 28: one daily flight between Seattle and Friedman Oct. 3-19: weekly (Thursday/Friday/Sunday) flights between Seattle and the Wood River Valley.

    Fly Sun Valley Alliance Executive Director Carol Waller said Alaska Airlines’ schedule in spring 2013 ended on March 31. She said part of the rationale for the extended schedule next spring is to coincide with a later date of Easter.
    “There’s more of an opportunity to capture some spring-break ski travel,” she said.
    Waller said flights during the last week of March 2013 were quite full, and she hopes the same will occur in April next year. She called the schedule expansion “a little bit of an experiment to see how can we continue to increase tourism by having more accessibility with the air service.” She said the service should also benefit Wood River Valley residents who have time to travel during slack season.
    The additional dates will be available for booking online at www.alaskaair.com after Oct. 13.
