The Community School boys’ varsity soccer team resumed its push for one of the top two seeds in next week’s High Desert Soccer Conference tournament with a 7-1 home win over the Declo Hornets Tuesday at Elkhorn’s Browning Field.

Sophomore Jay Fitzgerald (a team-high 13 goals) recorded his second three-goal hat trick of the season and was saluted by coach Richard Whitelaw as the “Man of the Match,” along with junior Roger Figge, who also scored a goal.

Adding goals for the Cutthroats (9-2-1, 6-1-1 league, 19 points), playing for the first time in 11 days, were Johnny Blackburn, Tom Gillespie and Dehner Figge. Declo fell to 2-8-0, 6 points.

The outcome sent Whitelaw’s squad into Thursday’s home game against reigning State 3A champion Gooding, also at Browning Field.

Gooding (8-1-1 league, 25 points) defeated the visiting Cutthroats 3-1 Sept. 10 and were coming off Tuesday’s 7-2 High Desert victory at No. 4-seeded Buhl (4-5-3, 4-4-2, 14 points).

High Desert tournament action for seven boys’ teams opens Saturday, Oct. 12 at SunWay Soccer Complex in Twin Falls. Only the top seeded team gets a first-round bye. The second seed plays the No. 7 seed, likely Filer, on Oct. 12.

The Cutthroats wrap up their league slate today, Friday at 5:45 p.m. at home against Bliss (2-6-0 league, 6 points), then travel to Filer (0-10-1, 0-8-1) Tuesday and host Wendell (6-2-1, 19 points) on Thursday, Oct. 10. Wendell won 5-1 at Filer Tuesday.

Coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroat girls (9-0-0, 8-0-0, 24 points) won by forfeit over Declo Tuesday and hosted Gooding (1-7-2, 3 points) Thursday. The Sun Valley girls host Bliss (6-3-0, 18 points) today at 4 p.m. and travel to Filer (10-2-1, 9-1-0, 27 points) Tuesday in a game between the top two league seeds.
