Get into the mindset of winter
The film “Into the Mind” will be screened by Sturtevants in Ketchum on Friday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. to raise money for the Sawtooth Avalanche Center.
The Sherpas Cinema explores Alaska, Bolivia, the Himalaya and other extreme skiing areas with a common skier toiling with the question of how to balance risk and reward.
Tickets are $15 for adults, with kids 14 and under $10.

See comedy of ‘biblical proportions’
“The Hobbit Trail: A Misguided Comedy Tour” with Nate Ford and Brendan O’Day will made a stop on its 40 shows in 40 nights tour (not up to 51 shows in 49 nights in 47 cities) at the Cornerstone Bar and Grill in Ketchum.

Idaho Labor Department is operating
Despite the partial shutdown of the federal government, the Idaho Department of Labor is operating normally. Unemployment insurance benefits are being paid and employment services are being provided throughout the department’s 25 local offices.
The Wood River office in Bellevue is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and closed Thursday and Friday.

Workers furloughed from federal agencies affected by the shutdown are eligible for unemployment insurance compensation.

Fire Department to host open house
The Sun Valley Fire Department will hold an open house and barbecue on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elkhorn Fire Station, 100 Arrowleaf Road.
Residents are invited to come and meet their local firefighters and thank them for their participation in their efforts helping to spare Sun Valley from the Beaver Creek Fire.
Take a tour of the station, view the department’s fire equipment and backcountry rescue gear and learn how to make your home “firewise.”
Free tire recycling Saturday
Idaho residents can dispose of old tires for free on Saturday, Oct. 5, at any Southern Idaho Solid Waste Facility. The Blaine County facility at Ohio Gulch will take up to four passenger car or pickup tires per person.
Tire Amnesty Day is scheduled to provide an opportunity to have used automobile tires recycled rather than disposed in landfills.
Tires left around on property provide breeding grounds for rodents and mosquitoes.
Last year, 265 tons of tires were diverted from Milner Butte landfill by tire recycling.
Airport to celebrate start of project
Friedman Memorial Airport will hold a Takeoff Celebration on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 5-7 p.m. to launch a three-year construction project that will allow it to keep operating under federal safety standards.
Drinks and Snacks will be served at a site somewhere between the terminal and the Atlantic Aviation building. Airport manager Rick Baird said the event should be similar to Business After Hours.
