Candidate: Sun Valley can be better

Peter Hendricks wants to improve local economy

Sun Valley resident Peter Hendricks thinks he can help make the city a better place to live.
Hendricks, a member of the Sun Valley Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, is one of three candidates running for City Council. He moved to Sun Valley with his wife, Lisa-Marie Allen, on a part-time basis in 2000, and they became full-time residents in 2008.
“The simple reason I’m running for office is I think I can help,” he said. “I really believe I can better the government process here.”
Hendricks said he started considering running for City Council a year ago and decided to run after regularly attending council meetings and reading stories in the Idaho Mountain Express.
“At these meetings, I noticed things that I was concerned about: the fiscal policy and certainly the almost confrontational rhetoric that was occurring between different groups, including the council and the citizens,” he said. “Maybe it wasn’t the right way to do it. It certainly wasn’t the most efficient way to do it.”

Hendricks is a retired institutional investment executive after working in the brokerage field for more than four decades. He served four and a half years in the Air Force after graduating from Notre Dame University. His wife is a figure skating coach in Sun Valley and was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic figure skating team.
Hendricks said he thinks he can improve the relationship between the Sun Valley and Ketchum city councils.
“I realize it’s as important to them as it is to us,” he said. “There’s no benefit to having a confrontational relationship. We won’t be able to protect and preserve what we have now if it continues.
“I think my biggest goal is to re-establish the conversation in the sense of cooperation between all of the entities in the Wood River Valley. Everything would flow through that. There would be a sense of fiscal responsibility and conversations that are not confrontational in which we work together for solutions resulting in a preservation of our quality of life.”
He said he is also very concerned about the future of the Sun Valley economy, especially in regards to its long-term future.
“I think our economic growth is very important,” he said. “We need to focus, concentrate and be creative in seeking solutions while being supportive of a long-term view. You cannot be unduly encouraged by successes nor can you be unduly discouraged by disappointments. It’s a long-term movement we need to work with, and if you don’t go forward, you’re moving backwards.”
