Sun Valley Youth Hockey plans hockey swap, events

     Sun Valley Youth Hockey is planning a number of pre-season events centering around the SVYH/Ketchum Park Penguins “Hockey Swap,” on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 12 noon-2 p.m. in the Atkinson Park Common Room, Ketchum.

     Drop off “Hockey Swap” items for sale from 11 a.m.-noon next Saturday, and pick up unsold gear and/or sale proceeds from 2-2:30 p.m. A total 15 percent of sales will benefit SVYH and Park Penguins. For more details contact Andi Meuicci, andimeucci.gmail.com or call 425-890-1585.

     Kids ages 5-9 who are interested in SVYH can give hockey a try Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 8-9 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. each day at Sun Valley Indoor Ice Rink. Kids will need helmets and gloves. Bring hockey sticks if you have them. Participants can use Sun Valley rental skates for free, if they don’t have skates.

Magazine salutes Elkhorn’s No. 5 golf hole

     In its August issue, Pacific Northwest Golfer Magazine selected the par-5 No. 5 hole at Elkhorn Golf Course as one of the “Great Holes of the Northwest.” It was one of just four holes chosen each year by the Northwest’s largest and longest-running golf publication, according to a Web site report by the Idaho Golf Association. The long, downhill hole known for its spectacular view measures anywhere from 650 yards from the Black Tees to 459 yards from the Copper Tees.

Middle school runners compete at Jerome

     Wood River Middle School runners did well last week in a conference meet at Jerome Middle School. The Hailey boys finished third overall led by Landon Nurge (4th). Other boys and their placings: 9—Dane Thompson. 20—Carter Gerringa. 22—Hunter Barrow. 25—Jorgen Lawrence. 26—Stephen Roth. 36—Luke Dean. 38—James Cantrell. 42—Luke Dahlen. 44—Colby Nance. 48—Sam Fauth. 50—Neff Reigle. 56—Will Carney.

     Ellie Gorham (27th) paced the fourth-place Wood River girls team. Others were: 28—Karsyn Gerringa. 31—Emma Flolo. 32—Dakota King Hutton. 34—Malaunie Gerard. 41—Ali Barney. 42—Marina Vercelli. 44—Sofia Kinney. 50—Piper Diges.

Bocce ball tourney is Friday

     Organizer Danny Walton of Ketchum is inviting locals to the third annual “Glow in the Dark” Bocce Ball World Championships set for Friday, Oct. 4 at Ketchum’s Atkinson Park.

     Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and the games will commence at 6 p.m., Walton said. The tournament won’t end until a world champ is crowned. The cost is $20 per person including a barbecue, beer and music.

     Prizes will be awarded for the top teams. All proceeds from Friday’s event go directly to Idaho Social Learning Center’s scholarship fund.

Golf ace at Bigwood

     Ketchum’s Doug D’Andrea carded his first-ever hole-in-one Friday, Sept. 27 using an 8-iron on the 151-yard No. 8 hole at Bigwood Golf Course north of Ketchum. Witness was Bigwood pro Aaron Thompson.

YMCA stages triathlon, duathlon and fun run Saturday

     The Ketchum-based Wood River Community YMCA is holding a recreational triathlon, duathlon and fun run event on Saturday, Oct. 5, with final registration deadline today, Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Y (727-9622).

     Saturday’s triathlon ($30 solo, $45 team) features a 750-meter swim in the Y lap pool, a 13-mile bike ride out Trail Creek Rd. east of Sun Valley, and a 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) run up to Adams Gulch Rd. and back. The duathlon ($25 solo, $40 team) does the 13-mile bike ride and 5k run, only. You can also participate in the 5k run, only ($15).

     Pick up bibs at the Y on Saturday from 7-7:45 a.m. for the triathlon, from 7:45-8:15 a.m. for the duathlon and 8:30-9:15 a.m. for the 5k run.

Wood River baseball, softball meeting Oct. 21

     Wood River Baseball and Softball Association (WRBSA) will hold its annual meeting and goal-setting discussion on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Distance Learning Center room at Hailey’s Wood River High School. Volunteer positions available on the board are president, vice president, treasurer, Babe Ruth director and All-Star director.
