Rain dampens final round of IGA golf

At Elkhorn Golf Course

Sunday’s steady rain didn’t stop 79 of Idaho’s best amateur golfers from finishing their final 18-hole round of the two-day, 36-hole Idaho Golf Association Tournament of Champions at Elkhorn Golf Course.

     The rain did affect scoring.

Only 23 of the club champions who played at Elkhorn carded better scores on Sunday compared to Saturday’s more favorable playing conditions. Only two, prep and collegiate stars Gabrielle Barker of Caldwell and Jordan Skyles of Boise, managed to break par.

Barker, a Vallivue High School senior, shot rounds of 71-71 for 2-under-par 142 with eight birdies and 23 pars to win the 10-player Women’s Division by six strokes over her sister, Tyler Barker of Caldwell (74-74 for 4-over-par 148) on the 5,470-yard Elkhorn Golf Course challenge.

Gabrielle Barker was the Idaho State 5A girls’ runner-up at May’s high school tournament in Lewiston. She and her sister won the IGA Women’s 4-Ball Championship June 1 in Caldwell, and Gabrielle placed 20th in the U.S. Junior National PGA Championship during August at Washington, D.C.

Boise State University senior golfer Skyles, a former IGA Junior State champion, had scores of 73-71 for even-par 144 on the 7,214-yard Men’s Division challenge and placed second of 26 finishers. Men’s winner by four strokes over Skyles was Boise golfer Scott Vermeer (68-72 for 4-under-par 140).

Vermeer had 14 pars and four birdies in his tournament-best round of 68 Saturday. He struggled more with eight pars and five bogeys Sunday, but still matched par. Former University of Oregon golfer Skyles, who helped Eagle High School to the State 5A golf title in 2008, carded four birdies and 11 pars in Sunday’s wet conditions.

Top result among the six Wood River golfers came from Ketchum’s Suzanne Williams.

She was second overall in Senior Women’s Division last year at Elkhorn, but she moved up to first place this year in a crowded contest with Sun Valley’s Georgia Hutchinson and Boise’s Shawna Ianson.

Williams (75-78 for 9-over-par 153) used her strong first round to win by a single stroke over second-place Hutchinson (78-76 for 154) and Ianson (78-76 for 154) on the 5,249-yard Senior Women’s layout. Placing 12th of 24 golfers was Sun Valley’s Mary Jane Burns (84-97 for 181).

Bob Lutz of Meridian (74-76 for 150) won the 23-player Senior Men’s Division by two strokes on the 6,305-yard layout. Tying for eighth was Hailey’s Dave Cropper (74-84 for 158). Tying for 14th was Dick Nelson of Hailey (80-83 for 163). In 17th place was Carmen Bradley of Sun Valley (80-87 for 167).
