Friday at Trento, Italy, Ketchum’s Richard Feldman of the Durance/Colnago team successfully defended his Un-ion Cycliste International (UCI) World Masters time trial title.
Action took place during the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) finals north of Venice.
Feldman, 44, captured his fourth straight UCI world time trial championship with a time of 35 minutes and 47 seconds for the 24.6-kilometer (15.2-mile) course. Closest competi-tor in the Men’s 40-44 age class was Swedish rider Viktor Tor-stensson, 56 seconds adrift.
In all, 420 racers including 85 women competed on the time trial course located in Cavedine in the Lake Valley (Valli dei Laghi). The overall winner was Matej Lolvse of Slovenia in 35:18, or 40.79 kilometers per hour. Feldman was sixth over-all in the entire field, at 35:47 or 40.23k/hour.
This is Feldman's eighth UCI World Master Time Trial Championship. He was the first American to win the Masters world time trial title in 2001 at St. Johann, Austria. Since, Feldman has won seven more rainbow jerseys emblematic of a UCI world champion—in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010-13.
He said about Friday’s race, “The course had a little bit of everything—a gradual uphill, followed by a very fast descent where I hit speeds over 80k/hour. There were technical turns and hills, one of which included a 12% grade. I am really proud to be able to wear the World Champion’s jersey for another year.”
Sunday, Feldman also com-peted in the 108k (66.9 mile) road race starting from the Pi-azza Duomo in downtown Trento. The race featured a brutally long climb, actually three climbs in all, finishing on the legendary Mont Bondone—3,000 meters of climbing in all.
Feldman (3.46:53, 29.6 k/hour) finished 14th out of 136 racers in the Men’s 40-44 age class, about 12 minutes in ar-rears. He was the second American behind eighth-place Scottie Weiss (3.42:29). Italian Antonio Borelli won the Men’s 40-44 race in 3.34:18.
Richard Mull, 61, a part-time resident of the Wood River Val-ley, competed at the same dis-tance, in the Men’s 60-64 age group and came in 13th of 41 finishers with a time of 4.18:54.  His race was won by the Nor-wegian Arne Raaen in 3.55:52.
