High school swimmers sweep season debut

Meet at Wood River Y


     High school swim season has started off with a splash by the Wood River High School girls’ swim team.

     Wood River dominated a field of 11 teams at the high school season opener, hosted by the Wolverines at Ketchum’s Y pool on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Wood River boys, picked up at sixth place as a team with only three swimmers competing.

     Leading the pack, and picking up two wins apiece were junior Kaedi Fry in 200 free and 100 back, along with Wolverine sophomores Maddie Johnson (200 I.M./ 100 fly) and Olivia Wentzell (50 free/100 breast).

     Freshman Chiloe Spelius picked up two second-place finishes in 200 free and 100 fly. Another ninth grader, Katherine Lemma took second in 100 free and third in 50 free. Ashley Dreyfus, a sophomore, was second in 200 I.M. and third in 100 breast.

     Other top-eight finishes for the Wood River girls Sept. 14: Senior Addy Gage (5th 50 free and 6th 100 free); senior Lisa Hart (6th in 200 free); freshman Danielle Doerflein (7th 100 breast and 8th 100 free); and junior Mia Smith (6th 100 back).

     Wood River’s three senior boys finished in the top five in their races.

     Logan Johnson led the way with a second in 100 free and third in 200 free. Brandon Yagla took third in 30 free and fifth in 100 free. Luke Verst was fourth in 30 free and 100 breast.

     The girl won all three relays. They were 200 medley (Fry, Wentzell, Johnson, Lemma); 200 free (Dreyfus, Wentzell, Lemma, Spelius); and 400 free (Johnson, Spelius, Dreyfus, Fry)

     Coach Brian Gallagher takes the Wolverines on the road to Pocatello on Saturday, Sept. 21. Wood River faces a tough fall competitive calendar as they combine both the Idaho High School and USA-sanctioned Snake River Swimming schedules.

     The season wraps up with the Idaho State High School championships in Boise Saturday, Nov. 2.
