Hailey, Carey volleyball teams win their matches

Despite injuries to two important outside hitters, the Wood River High School varsity volleyball team had a good week.

Coach Tim Richards’ Wolverines (3-6, 1-1 league) earned their first Great Basin Conference win of the season last Tuesday by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21 over host Jerome.

On Thursday, Wood River split a non-conference tri-meet at Filer—dispatching the Buhl Tribe 25-14, 25-19 and taking a talented Filer squad (8-4) to the limit. Filer won 28-26, 25-27, 15-11.

About the Jerome match, Richards said, “The team defense was sound and serving accuracy was excellent.”

“Brittney Bradley led us in assists and hit some timely kills down the line. Mary Petzke and Sadie Dawson contributed numerous kills from the middle positions.

“Ciceley Peavey moved back to the libero position and led us with about 20 digs as she controlled the middle of the floor.”

Wood River continued to play without injured outside hitters Sydney Thomsen, a senior, and junior Haley Cutler—meaning the Wolverines played most of the night at Filer with two freshman outside hitters. And they did well.

Blair Radford played her best match and led all hitters with 17 swings and 5 kills and 6 digs in the two-game win over Buhl. Dawson and Petzke played well in the middle. Wood River raised its total team kills to 11 in the two games.

Going to the maximum of three with Filer, the Wolverines amassed a season-high 16 kills led by senior Petzke and freshman Michelle Mason with 3 kills. Peavey had 20 digs.

Richards said, “Overall, it was the outstanding match night of the season and one to give the Wolverines a lot of confidence moving into conference games against Burley (Tuesday, Sept. 17) and Minico (at Rupert Thursday).”

Serving success lifts Panthers on court

Carey High School sophomore hitter Medin Cenarrusa was too strong at the serving line for the host Community School Cutthroats to handle in a Northside Conference volleyball match Monday evening at The Fish Tank in Sun Valley.

Pounding nearly half of Carey’s 52 service winners, Cenarrusa (24 winners, 8 aces) helped the Panthers post their first 1A Division 2 Northside Conference match victory of the season 25-11, 25-13, 25-8.

Cenarrusa (3 kills) was a big part of a Panther attack that included seven kills apiece by senior hitter/setter Ashley Durtschi and junior hitter Natalie Villanueva (1 block). Junior Kylie Castle added six service winners and junior setter/hitter Paige Koudelka had five winners and three aces.

Senior setter Daphne Kirkland (4 service winners) and Durtschi (11 winners, 3 aces) also enjoyed success at the stripe, and sophomore Hailee Johnson came off the bench to score several points for visiting Carey.

Coach Kathy Whitworth’s Panthers (1-5) had absorbed a couple of tough Northside league losses last week—to Murtaugh 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24 last Tuesday in Carey, and at Castleford 28-26, 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 15-4 Thursday.

The Cutthroats of coach Kristyn Rutland improved their serve-receive and defense in the second and third games Monday night, sparked by the back-row returns of 5-9 senior middle blocker Allison Fluetsch and senior Jolie Blair.

Encouraged by a raucous student section that cheered every Cutthroat return over the net, Rutland’s squad got as close as 16-10 in the second game with sophomore setter Darby David delivering an ace and a successful tip.

Senior Devon Sherrerd (2 service winners) contributed three kills for the Cutthroats, and Fluetsch had a block and three service aces.

Rutland’s squad hosts Dietrich Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. on the same floor. Carey hosts Richfield Thursday and entertains Dietrich Tuesday.
