Junior quarterback Nate Adamson scored two running touchdowns and passed for one more as the Carey High School eight-man football team rallied past host Rockland 30-20 in a Sawtooth Conference West-East match-up Friday.

Sawtooth West contender Carey (2-1) captured its second straight win over a Sawtooth East rival with a big 16-point third quarter that overcame an 8-6 first-half deficit.

Senior Tori Alvarez scored on a seven-yard run and Adamson tallied his second TD along with two conversion runs for a 22-8 lead.

When Rockland cut its deficit to 22-14 in the fourth quarter, Carey responded with an Adamson-to-Christian Zarate scoring pass for insurance.

Adamson, who took over at quarterback in Carey’s 38-27 home win over North Gem of Sawtooth East Sept. 6, finished 10-for-19 for 145 yards in the passing department.

Defense was a strong point for Carey with Alvarez (15 tackles) leading the way and the Panther secondary intercepting four Bulldog aerials. In contrast, Rockland (0-2) has now yielded 97 points in two setbacks this season.

Other defensive stars for Carey were Joe Parke 6 tackles/3 assists, Collin Whitby 5/2, Zarate 4/1, Zach Olsen 3/4, Adamson 3/3, Matt Whitworth 4/2 and Toby Whitworth 2/1.

For the game, Carey amassed 379 total yards and Rockland had 263. Alvarez finished with 17 carries for 118 yards, Zarate added 9 carries for 45 yards and Adamson rushed 13 times for 59 yards. Carey’s rushing totals were 43 carries for 234 yards, compared to Rockland’s 35 carries for 201 yards.

Carey has a bye week and will get ready to host its 2013 Homecoming football game against the Dietrich Blue Devils Friday, Sept. 27 at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.

Dietrich (3-0, 47.6 ppg) won 26-20 at Wells (Nev.) last Friday and will play an important Sawtooth West game at Castleford (1-2) on Friday, Sept. 20. Castleford won its first game 60-12 at Rimrock last week.

There’s been quite a recent history between Castleford and Dietrich, which has a 13-2 record since a 60-14 loss at Carey in 2011.

Castleford beat Dietrich 46-0 and 44-38 in the playoffs in 2010 and 2011, but Dietrich won 70-22 over Castleford last year en route to third place in the State 1A Division 2 playoffs.

In another Sawtooth West clash this coming Friday, last year’s state runner-up Lighthouse Christian (3-0, 52.6 ppg) will host Richfield (2-0, 57.0 ppg). Lighthouse won 56-8 at home over Calvary Chapel of Idaho Falls last week.
