Bonus days

The entire population in the Sun Valley area is entitled to feel a little discombobulated.
Residents and the intrepid visitors who stayed for the fireworks, so to speak, survived the whipsawing inflicted by the Beaver Creek Fire on the entire Wood River Valley community.
Some days we were under pre-evacuation orders. Some of us had to evacuate in the middle of the night. No one knew from one hour to the next if state Highway 75 would be open or not.
Even after firefighters had corralled the Beaver Creek Fire, the Little Queens and Kelley fires continued to upset deck dining by raining a little ash. Nonetheless, Ketchum executed Wagon Days flawlessly.
Neighbors who wisely had fled to outlying areas returned for the festivities. Then came the rains, the blessed rains that even with a little thunder and lightning helped extinguish the fires.
Valley residents and officials haven’t had time to fully process everything that occurred during the fires or to work with public agencies to figure out how to restore nearby canyons scorched by the fire.
With the Labor Day holiday followed by school openings, some people still have some possessions in boxes waiting to be replaced in their homes.
That said, the fall season is nearly upon us. The aspens, willows and cottonwoods are beginning to change color. The days are cooler, in the low 70s—perfect hiking and biking weather. When it’s not cloudy, the sun is warm in a high blue sky punctuated with cumulus clouds.
These are bonus days, the calm after the storm, the days everyone here lives for. They are the antidote for way too much excitement. So, remember why you’re here. Get out, look around, inhale the clear air, soak up the scenery and enjoy the bonus days of the fall season.
