Express listed among top newspapers in U.S.

Receives General Excellence award from National Newspaper Association

    For the fifth time in the last seven years, the National Newspaper Association—the largest newspaper association in the United States—has recognized the Idaho Mountain Express as one of the premier community newspapers in the country.
   The NNA announced Saturday that the Express was awarded third place in the General Excellence category in the NNA’s 2013 Better Newspapers Contest, which judged work done in 2012. The Express competed with non-daily newspapers nationwide with a circulation of 10,000 or more.
   The award was announced at the NNA’s annual convention last weekend in Phoenix, Ariz. The judges’ comments about the Express were: “Very clean, modular layout. Strong use of white space. Nice package of local news and features. Excellent production. A real winner!”
   In the category of large non-daily newspapers, the NNA awarded first place to The Examiner, of Beaumont, Texas, and second place to The Taos News, of Taos, N.M.
   Newspapers are judged on quality of writing; headline language; use of photos and art work; design and typography; editorial pages; front page; family life/living pages; sports pages; advertising design and layout; quality and technique of writing copy; handling of classified and/or reader ads and taste; and treatment of public notices.
   In 2007, 2008 and 2011, the Express won awards in the General Excellence category. In 2010, the Express earned second place nationwide for Best Local News Coverage.
   Established in 1885, the Missouri-based NNA represents about 2,200 member newspapers.
