Many in valley deserve thanks for work on fire

    I want to continue to give thanks to the awesome firemen that battled “The Beast,” which sought to devour our homes and towns just a little over four weeks ago. (I wish the firemen who came from other states could see the thank you signs that still line our roadways.)
    We are all so indebted to them! I also thank our police and mayors and everyone else who worked hard to coordinate efforts and to continually report the status of the fire.  That also goes for Idaho Mountain Express reporters—especially Greg Moore and Tony Evans—who gave detailed information that we were all so anxious to know. And I loved the interview that Jennifer Liebrum wrote on Beth Lund, the incident commander.  What an incredible person this woman is!  I had heard her speak at the community meeting and I could “feel” her strength of presence: her wisdom, experience, calm resolve and competence.  I even had the privilege to meet and tearfully thank this remarkable woman the night before she was leaving town, but I wouldn’t have known much about her without the benefit of this interview. Imagine: She is one of only two women in the entire country that works as a U.S. Forest Service Type I incident commander.  (Plus, there are only 14 men who hold this position.)
    Lastly, I want to thank our dear community. Even in the midst of this terrifying ordeal, it was comforting to see the care and generosity that people extended to one another. Oh, yes—and I’m thankful for all the rain we’ve now been getting.
