Health fair aims to educate families

Saturday event to provide array of information for all ages

     St. Luke’s Center for Community Health will host its second annual Community Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Community Campus, 1050 Fox Acres Road in Hailey.
     “This will be a very fun event,” St. Luke’s Community Outreach Coordinator Erin Buell said. “It will be a family-oriented event. Every person of all ages can have a hands-on experience that will provide them with positive resources to improve their health.”
Currently, there are 45 exhibits scheduled, with more being added on each day. Buell said she believes the most popular events will be the free skin-cancer screenings and blood-pressure checks. There will also be an education session on flu shots, which will explain why now is not too early to get the inoculation.
      At last year’s fair, there was an inflatable colon exhibit that displayed the contrast between a healthy and unhealthy colon. This Saturday, there will be a walkable inflatable exhibit of a child’s healthy digestive system in which people will enter through an exhibit of a child’s lips.
      Buell said planning for the event began back in April, with the hospital reaching out to several community nonprofit organizations to help provide resources. She said that people of all ages can learn something beneficial to improve their health, and encouraged all people to attend, even if they can only stay briefly.
      “To me, having the community understand how many ways they can better their health is really eye-opening,” Buell said. “Accessing how to better your health here will be a big and broad umbrella.”
For every session participants attend at the fair, they will receive a raffle ticket to win a wide variety of prizes. The prizes will include a cookbook, slow cookers, bus passes, YMCA passes, a gift certificate to a sporting goods store and free mammograms.
In addition to the informational sessions, there will be a zumba class and a yoga demonstration. Children will be able to use hula hoops and face paint. Buell said there will be informational sessions in Spanish as well.
     “We have been able to get an amazing amount of health professionals to get involved here,” Buell said. “This is going to cover the gamut, with sessions on mental, physical, emotional and clinical health.”
