Valley cyclists ride to national titles

Road championships at Bend

Durance-Colnago riders from Ketchum made a strong showing at the USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships held Sept. 4-8 in and around Bend, Ore. Three of the five Durance cyclists won national championships in their age classes, and they captured four podium spots in all.

Racing started in Prineville, Ore. about 31 miles outside of Bend with the time trials on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Over the next two days, road races took place around Mount Bachelor near Sunriver south of Bend.

Patty Puz, 74, retained her Stars-and-Bars for the 2014 season by winning the 20 kilometer (12.4 mile) Women’s 70-plus time trial in a time of 38:32.4. It was the sixth national championship for Puz.

Ketchum’s Richard Feldman, 44, won the national time trial championship among 30 finishers in the Master Men’s 40-44 class with a time of 37:19.4 for the 29.7k (1.4-mile) distance. His time was the fastest of the day, and was 0.9 seconds ahead of second-place Christopher Phipps, 44, of San Francisco. Ca. and Thirsty Bear Cycling (37:20.3).

Phipps (2.48:36) won the 111.7k (69-mile) road race for Master Men 40-44 Sept. 5 at Bachelor. The race was punctuated by a 20-minute one-inch hailstorm for the final 10k. Out of 76 finishers in the big class, Feldman came in fifth place, taking the final podium spot in 2.49:19.

Former Ketchum endurance athlete Michael Tobin, 50, of Boise placed second of 69 cyclists in the Men’s 50-54 national road race over 84k (52 miles) with a time of 2.08:06.

Hailey’s Priscilla Woods, 71, of Durance-Colnago won the Women’s 70-74 national championship road race in a time of 3:03:24 to repeat last year's victory.

Other Durance-Colnago racers included Tom Campion, 71, who placed seventh in the Master Men’s 70-74 time trial in 31:06.9 for 20k.

John Swyers, 74, raced the time trial, Men's 70-74, for 10th place in 31:41.5, and also the road race, Men's 70-74, for 17th in 2:20:27.

“These results are great for the upcoming World Championships in Italy,” said Feldman, referring to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships at Florence, Italy in Tuscany Sept. 22-29.

Recently it was announced that Sara Youmans, 17, of Ketchum was one of three Junior Women selected to the USA Cycling National Road Cycling Team set to compete at the UCI world competition.
