Couple hatches plan to help businesses

Former Blaine County Commissioner Len Harlig and his wife, Carol, have launched plan they hope will increase local spending while giving back to firefighters and others who helped the valley during the Beaver Creek Fire.
   The couple plans to purchase $1,000 worth of $100 gift certificates at local businesses for the next five months, helping the establishments get by until the winter ski season. The Harligs are giving the cards to firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and hospital workers who they hope will spend the money locally and generate local economic activity.
   “The intent is to help local businesses and do something for the firefighters and first responders that helped save us during the Beaver Creek Fire,” said Len Harlig.
   The Harligs have dubbed the effort “Occupy Main Street.” They are hoping others will join in the effort,
   “Maybe we can start a movement and help revitalize our local economy,” Harlig said.
