4 to compete for 2 seats in Hailey

    The Hailey City Council could have some new faces in January. Two challengers have stepped forward to run against incumbents Don Keirn and Martha Burke in the November city election.
   Hailey Planning and Zoning Commissioner Geoffrey Moore will run against Keirn for Seat No. 2. Marketron Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Walt Denekas will run against Burke for Seat No. 1.
   Hailey voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to choose a winner.
   Burke and Keirn have both had long terms of service on the City Council. Burke, a resident of Old Hailey, is seeking her sixth term in office. Keirn is seeking a fifth term on the four-person legislative panel.
   Denekas said in an interview that he is running for office because Hailey needs a more balanced economy.
   “One that is not only reliant on the tourist industry in Ketchum, but also white-collar, information-sector jobs,” Denekas said.
   Moore has served for on the Hailey P&Z Commission since 2008, often criticizing the City Council for overspending.
   Hailey voters will also vote on a ballot measure that would support the Fly Sun Valley Alliance with a 1 percent increase in the local option tax on car rentals and hotels rooms.
   Funding from the proposed LOT increase would be used to pay for maintaining and increasing commercial air service to Friedman Memorial Airport, through the use of minimum revenue guarantees or other inducements to commercial airlines.
   The funding would also be used to promote and market air service to increase passenger numbers.
   Bellevue City Council members David Hattula and Janet Duffy will run unopposed to keep their seats. Hattula will presumably be elected to a third two-year term on the council. Duffy would presumably commence her second term in January.
