The city of Bellevue has for many generations celebrated Labor Day weekend in a big way. Families return to town, barbecues and arts and crafts fairs proliferate, and the town rocks with music.
“Labor Day in Bellevue is shaping up real nice,” Mayor Chris Koch said.
The 89th annual Bellevue Labor Day Celebration and Main Street Parade theme for 2013 is “Bellevue: Past, Present and Future.” The Bellevue Chamber of Commerce has come together to make sure it is a memorable weekend.
On Saturday, Aug. 31, a good, old-fashioned ice-cream social and baking contest will begin at the Bellevue Historical Museum on the corner of Main and Cedar streets at 1:30 p.m. The event will feature local fiddlers and crafts for the kids.
On Sunday, events will be kicked up a notch as live music begins on the stage at the Bellevue Memorial Park at 1:30 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m.
The lineup this year includes Triple Crown, Mia Edsal, Slow Children Playing, Bad Penny, Rick Hoel, Mark Slocum, and Dewey Pickett and Howe. There will also be bouncy houses, a kids train, food vendors, and arts and crafts booths at the park.
A petting zoo will benefit the Wood River Middle School cheerleaders.
On Monday, Labor Day morning, a community Pancake Breakfast will take place at the Bellevue Community Church on Cedar Street across from Memorial Park.
For those who want to work up an appetite first, there will be 5k Fun Walk or Run to benefit firefighters. Registration for the run begins at the corner of Fourth and Cedar streets at 8:30 a.m.
All proceeds from the 5K run will be donated to the local volunteer Bellevue Fire Department, which has been part of the Beaver Creek Fire crew. The registration proceeds will go to the Burn-Out Fund, which is used to help anyone who suffers a home fire.
The Labor Day Parade will begin at noon at the Bellevue Historical Museum at 218 N. Main St. Anyone wanting to participate in the parade should meet at 11 a.m. at the museum.
Along with the traditional parade entries of horse teams, old tractors and fire engines, this year’s parade will include the Skate, Pedal, Skoot Brigade. Entrants for the brigade are encouraged to decorate bikes, trikes, wagons, wheelchairs, strollers or any other nonmotorized form of transportation they can get their hands on.
The round-trip parade route will proceed south down Main Street to the post office and then return north to the museum.
Other events throughout the day include Family Bingo, and three-on-three basketball competitions at Memorial Park to benefit the Wood River High School boys basketball team. A red-hot Chili Cook-Off will be hosted by the Wood River Masons.
Complete schedules for all events can be found in Labor Day programs distributed at Bellevue businesses.
