Hailey thinclads ready for CSI 3.1-mile debut

Friday in Twin Falls

Wood River High School cross country coaches Monte Brothwell and Heather Miller have welcomed 33 runners to early-season practices.

The new-look Wolverine thinclads debut their 2013 season Friday, Aug. 30 at the CSI/Jerome Invitational 5-kilometer footrace on the Twin Falls campus of the College of Southern Idaho.

Returning are nine of Wood River’s runners who represented the Hailey school as boys’ and girls’ teams during the State 4A meet last Oct. 27 at Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston.

Brothwell said, “Our boys have a lot of new freshmen and sophomores. The girls will have a strong squad with all but one of the girls from last year’s state squad returning. Plus, the addition of (senior) Haley Montgomery will help that strength. The girls also have a lot of new freshmen.”

Those who graduated include Chase England, who won the Great Basin Conference individual title last October on Sun Valley Resort’s White Clouds Golf Course trail.

Among 19 boys practicing this season are top runners from last year like junior Alexis Gonzalez (16th district 2012), senior Ty Reinemann (15th district, 73rd state), junior Cameron Bingham (25th district, 76th state) and junior Connor Hayes (45th district).

Both the Wood River boys’ and girls’ teams placed third in the conference meet and qualified as full teams for the 2012 Lewiston trip. This year’s GBC district meet is in Burley and the State 4A run is in Idaho Falls.

A strong distance runner in spring track, Montgomery used to play soccer for Wood River but elected to run cross country this fall. She is likely to make a formidable duo with senior Janel Passey, who placed seventh of 70 runners at the White Clouds district run and was 44th at state.

Other girls’ state returners are senior Mariah Stout (13th district, 74th state), junior Grace Gorham (19th district, 90th state), junior Avery Closser (21st district, 99th state), sophomore Amanda Passey (11th district, 76th state) and sophomore Hallie MacPherson (23rd district, 98th state).

Coach Miller said, “I’m very excited to see the size of both the boys and girls teams and think the depth of the team will show through in competition.”

Barring more wildfire issues, Wood River and the Community School will host the Sun Valley Classic 3.1-mile regional race for all classifications Friday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. on the Sagewillow trails.
