Cutthroat girls keep focus on the big prize

Feldman?s squad eyes return to state title game

Now that the Community School girls have been to the State 3A soccer championship game for the first time, the Sun Valley girls will spend the 2013 season trying to get back there and possibly win the big game.

Coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroats (16-3-1 last fall) lost their only games to McCall-Donnelly last fall including 2-1 in a marvelous State 3A championship contest in Twin Falls. That decider was preceded by a 15-game unbeaten streak for the powerful Cutthroats.

Second place was the best state tournament finish for the Cutthroats in 14 state tournament trips since 1996.

Over the last four seasons the Cutthroats have outscored foes 395-95 and boast 43 shutouts in 83 games—good reasons they’ve taken home four state trophies in their last four trips.

Led by Hannah Dies, the only 3A girl picked on the 2012 Idaho High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State squad dominated by big city stars, the Cutthroats outscored opponents 99-20 last fall with 11 shutouts in 20 games.

Dies (25 goals, 71 career) is on pace to break the school career scoring mark of 75 set by Ellie Swanson (2009-12) last year. And Dies leads a strong contingent of eight Cutthroat seniors who want another shot at the top state tourney prize.

“We have very high expectations for this team, especially after last year’s runner-up performance,” said coach Feldman, whose Cutthroats are 92-27-5 the past six years. “Captains Katie Feldman, Jordan Fitzgerald and Erin Hennessy will ably lead this group.”

Dies and Swanson provided a nasty 1-2 scoring punch last year. Sophomore Lilly Jenner (16 goals as a freshman) could very well join Dies in providing another such scoring tandem.

The Cutthroats have won four consecutive High Desert Soccer Conference tournament titles and seem to be mainly chasing two-time defending state champion McCall-Donnelly (17-4-1 last fall) for 3A honors in the post-season race.

Unfortunately, last weekend’s season-opening home games between the Community School and McCall-Donnelly on the Sagewillow Farms pitch in Elkhorn were canceled by Beaver Creek Fire impacts.
