Ketchum’s Alison Poulsen captured her third national water skiing slalom championship earlier in August at West Palm Beach, Fla.

She called it her best performance since she started competing nine years ago.

Poulsen, 51, won the Women’s W4 slalom competition out of 20 entries with a score of 98 and 1,388 points, out-distancing second place Patricia Cordeiro, 46, of Lake Worth, Fla., who had a 92.5 score and 1,162 points.

Action took place at the 71st GOODE Water Ski National Championships that began Tuesday, Aug. 13 and ended Saturday, Aug. 17 at Okeeheelee Park, West Palm Beach.

More than 600 water ski athletes from across the U.S. competed for national titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall in respective age divisions and two Open divisions during the five-day tournament.

Poulsen said, “I won the regionals three times and the nationals two times before this. I believe I won both regionals and nationals in 2011 and possibly the year before. Yet this was the toughest competition and by far my best score.”

She added about the world’s largest three-event water ski tournament, “I am qualified for Open but I skied in the Women’s 4 Division because the top real pros who have skied since they were young skied in it.

“I had won nationals twice before, but this felt like a real accomplishment because I skied really well against some tough competition. I surpassed second place by almost a full pass (5-and-a-half buoys) with a score of 2 at 38 off, and tied for fifth among all the women including pros. So I am psyched.”

Since she took up the sport, Poulsen has trained with Miles Stanislaw here in the Wood River Valley. She said about Stanislaw, “I train at his lake MGM in Bellevue and he is a fantastic skier (one of the best at the age of 70) and my favorite ski coach/mentor.”
