Dale Martin honored as top coach

Gold watch for softball

     Wood River High School softball coach Dale Martin has been presented a gold watch from the Idaho Athletic Coaches Association for being the Gem State’s “2013 Distinguished Coach of the Year” for achievement in softball.

     Martin, 75, has head-coached Wood River softball at the 4A level for nine years with a 105-132 record and three Great Basin Conference tourney titles. The Bakersfield, Ca. native has coached softball on-and-off for 51 years dating to his southern California playing days in major fast pitch softball.

     He graduated from Whittier College in 1961, operated a sporting goods store for eight years and moved to Seattle, in 1970. He and wife Marti ran a landscaping business there, sold it in 1996 and moved to the Wood River Valley in 1997. Martin has coached at Wood River since and served in field maintenance and equipment.

     Wood River High School athletic and activities director John Rade explained about Martin’s recent award:

     Rade said, “Each district nominates a Distinguished Coach for each sport. This award can be given to a current coach or a coach that has left the game for no more than 10 years.

     “Every July, the Idaho Athletic Coaches Association votes on a Distinguished Coach for each sport. This award is a great honor because those that receive the award represent the whole state of Idaho. In other words, there is only one softball coach receiving the award for the whole state of Idaho.

     “Dale Martin truly deserves this award for his countless hours he has dedicated to the sport of softball. He is always in the hunt for state qualifying regardless of talent. He is dedicated to the game. His passion and respect for the sport of Softball cannot be beat. His athletes always work hard for him and are always well coached. He is respected by his peers and coaching staff.”
