Community School prepares for Sept. 3 opening

Pre-school meetings set for this week

The Community School of Sun Valley has a busy week of open houses, orientations and “Back to School” sessions leading up to the start of the 2013-14 school year on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
New student and parent orientations for the elementary, middle and upper school are set for Thursday, Aug. 29, at different times. The All-School Family Reception will be Thursday from 5-6:30 p.m. on the quad of the independent school.
The Early Childhood Center Open House takes place Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, and the kindergarten open house Friday from 11 a.m. to noon. On Tuesday, Sept. 3, a parent welcome featuring questions and answers takes place from 8:15-9:15 a.m. in the Elementary School Community Room.
Last week, the Beaver Creek Fire impacts in the valley caused Community School officials to push back the start of school by one week and cancel the school’s Fall Campout, which was called one of the school’s most valued traditions.
In an email to faculty, families and students, Community School administrators David Holmes, Ben Pettit and Rob Landis jointly wrote, “Cancellation of the Fall Campout is a disappointment to us all. The administrative team is discussing alternative ways we can assimilate new students and build community.”
On a positive note, they added, all class trips in September are still happening. Middle School trips are set for Sept. 9-13 and Upper School trips from Sept. 21-27.
The Outdoor Program Orientation for new students and families takes is Thursday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m. in the theater.
Parent meetings for the sixth-grade, seventh-grade and eighth-grade trips to City of Rocks, Salmon River and Glacier National Park are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 3, between the hours of 8-10 a.m. in the Library Conference Room.
