Steve and Lila Wagner built the third house in the area at the mouth of Timber Gulch, south of Ketchum, 30 years ago. They were forced to evacuate their home Thursday, Aug. 15, when the Beaver Creek Fire approached their doorsteps. “We left our doors open and felt confident leaving the house in the protection of law enforcement and the National Guard,” Steve Wagner said. “We took everything when we were evacuated for the Castle Rock Fire but this time we downsized to just the important things,” Lila said. “Our evac plan that we have in place pretty much reinforces what’s important in your life and we can adjust the level of evacuation to the degree of danger,” the couple said. The Wagners also agreed that the level of fire protection they received was exceptional and encouraged progressive fire management practices for the future. Fire managers said that if the battle for Timber Gulch was lost, Bald Mountain and parts of Ketchum could have been seriously threatened by the fire.
