Don Nurge resigns from school board

Trustee cites family obligations as reason for leaving

Don Nurge is no longer a trustee for the Blaine County School District. His resignation became effective at the end of Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
In a letter to district staff, Nurge, who had served as board vice chair, cited family obligations as his reason for resigning after serving on the board for two years. The letter was released Friday.
“As this school year comes to an end I have often found myself reflecting on my duties as a school board trustee and the responsibilities I have to my family,” Nurge stated. “I have become increasingly aware that these obligations, which are both so important to me, are in conflict with the amount of time and energy I have available and the commitment each deserves.”
Nurge joined the board in 2011, replacing Trustee Julie Dahlgren, who chose not to run for re-election for the Zone 5 trustee seat. Nurge was the only candidate to file for the seat, so his election was automatic and a vote was not required. Zone 5 encompasses the east Ketchum and Sun Valley areas.
Selecting a new trustee from Zone 5 is the responsibility of the school board. The last time a new trustee was appointed by the board was in 2010 when Kathryn Graves was selected from four candidates who filed for the Zone 3 position with the resignation of then Trustee Mari Beth Matthews. Zone 3 encompasses the western and northern areas of Hailey.
The School District has not yet announced when it will start accepting applications for the Zone 5 post. Applicants are required to live within the boundaries of the zone.
Nurge further wrote in his letter that his decision to resign was not an easy one.
“This has been a very difficult decision for me and my family because of what the students, staff and patrons of the school district mean to me,” he stated. “However, I know that this is the right decision for me and my wife and children. This will allow the precious time that we want to spend together.
“I have been proud to be part of such an outstanding team and have truly enjoyed working with all of the administrators, educators, staff and board over the past years. We feel very grateful and fortunate as parents and community members in the Wood River Valley for the opportunities and challenges provided to our children and the many future young leaders who attend the public school system in Blaine County.”
Nurge serves as a volunteer firefighter with the Ketchum Fire Department.
