Pay it forward

    Firefighters saved Wood River Valley homes and businesses and residents from the Beaver Creek Fire. We are thankful.
    We will celebrate with Wagon Days as scheduled on Labor Day weekend. It may be a bit smaller than usual, but clearing skies and spectator joy promise to make the Big Hitch Parade one to remember.
    Even though we will celebrate noisily, many of the firefighters who fought the nasty inferno will already have moved on, assigned to other conflagrations. We can’t whoop and applaud loud enough or long enough for them to hear.
    So, we must act.
    For example, Sun Valley Resort is paying for a free-admission ice show this Saturday. It will accept donations for bleacher seating and donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which provides emotional and financial assistance to families of firefighters injured or killed in the line of duty.
    Beaver Creek is the second large wildfire to hit the area in six years. It took nearly 1,800 brave men and women to save us—again. We owe them respect—and more support than we can possibly give.
    Fighting fires is incredibly physical, dirty and dangerous work. Area residents, mountain people all, know better than most the physical stamina, will and intelligent intensity it takes to do this work.
    We need to follow the resort’s lead and put our money where our mouths are by donating to the firefighter foundation, wffoundation.org, local firefighter funds or the American Red Cross, redcross.org.
    It’s only right to pay our rescue forward in any amount we can. It all counts when people’s backs are against the wall, something we know so well.
