Proposed commissioner raises are excessive

    Yes, I understand the whole review process for county salaries that has been happening since 2006. Still, the argument that commissioner compensation is higher in other areas doesn’t really seem relevant. This is supply and demand.
   The current commissioners knew what their pay was before taking office, and one hopes they also understood the demands of the job. Most of us these days are working for less than our value; sadly that’s just how things are in this economy. Moreover, that has always been one of the trade-offs of living here. If a commissioner wants a higher compensation, than they can do what the rest of us have to do: make the choice between living in the Wood River Valley or moving somewhere else where the pay is higher.
   In the meantime, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of folks who are interested in the position. Even when two commissioners left for higher-paying jobs, their replacements are in no way inferior—are they?
   I fully support cost-of-living raises. A raise of $20,400 over five years, however, seems excessive.
