Red Cross shelter helps dozens get by

Salvation Army offers meals

    The Community Campus at the east end of Fox Acres Road in Hailey has become a sanctuary for those fleeing the smoke and leaving their homes, driven out by the Beaver Creek Fire.
   A Salvation Army trailer is serving meals and an American Red Cross shelter is providing beds, meals and showers.
   The Community Campus is also a good place to go to find air-conditioning and to use computer stations to stay in contact with relatives and get fire updates.
   The Red Cross disaster shelter at the Community Campus housed 41 residents on Monday with eight children “from toddlers to teens,” said Red Cross Regional Chief Executive Officer Nicole Irwin.
   The shelter provides cots, showers and private rooms when necessary. Residents are protected from the media and no interviews are allowed.
   One resident is a “high-risk” pregnancy and needs to stay off her feet, said Irwin.
   Residents also include road flagging crews who stay for the night, get a meal and a shower and then return to work. Residents can come and go to work as they please.
   The shelter has day-camps and other activities for children.
   “Many people came here from trailer parks. Some of them were completely unprepared for evacuation. Some of the children are quite alarmed,” said Irwin.
   She said the shelter will remain in place for at least five days, but is also planning for a longer term.
   With a staff of 23 volunteers, and two paid staff members, the Red Cross is supplying medical prescription supplies, eyeglass replacements and other services.
   In case of home loss, the Red Cross will supply vouchers for rental assistance, hotel stays, clothing and other supplies.
   The Salvation Army has served 350 meals at a trailer outside the main entrance of the Community Campus building since the fire began.
   Salvation Army Major Ed Patterson said the trailers will remain in place as long as needed.
