Sun Valley gets ?permanent? fire chief

Ray Franco will continue to lead department

After serving Sun Valley for just under a year and a half as interim fire chief, Ray Franco has been appointed by Mayor Dewayne Briscoe as the city’s fire chief, effective June 1.

“I’m really excited about [the appointment],” Franco said. “The opportunity to serve the public with all the other firefighters in the area is quite an honor. It’s just an honor to be able to serve the city and the county.”

Briscoe chose Franco to lead the city’s Fire Department after screening and interviewing several other candidates, according to a recent news release from the city.

Franco began working for the city in 1989 as a paid, on-call firefighter. Since then, he has worked for the Fire Department as an engineer and captain. In 2008, he was promoted to assistant fire chief.

Franco succeeds longtime Fire Chief Jeff Carnes, who resigned in September 2012 after 38 years of service with the city. Carnes had then been on paid administrative leave for nearly a year. He declined then to give a reason as to why he resigned.

The news release also states that Briscoe appointed Taan Robrahn as the department’s permanent training and operations officer. Before the appointment, Robrahn filled that position in a temporary capacity.
