Pool records are set for SV5B at Boise meet

Sixteen members of the Sun Valley 5B swim team were in the field of 518 swimmers on 28 Northwest teams at the Boise YMCA’s annual Spring Fling competition May 17-19.  It was the first meet of the long-course summer season.

Coach Brian Gallagher’s squad posted significant personal best times as they continued to dominate the pool and scoring. Highlights included 14-year-old Maddie Johnson setting two new pool records.

In the Women’s 13-14 year-old age class, Johnson won the 100- and 200-meter butterfly, and captured first place in the balance of all her events—400m, 800m and 1500m free, 50m fly, and 200m Individual Medley. In the 100m fly, Johnson’s overall win (13-and-over) was against women’s teams from Boise State and University of Nevada/Reno.

Senior veteran team members Gus Kimball and Tayler Bates posted strong swims.

Kimball with top-12 finishes in 50m, 100m and 200m breast. Bates placed eighth in the 100m fly and ninth in the 1500m free. Also, senior Christine Hughes placed 11th in the 50m fly.

In Women’s 15-and-over, Kaedi Fry finished in the top eight in six of her events, with a best of fourth in 800m free.

Ashley Dreyfus placed fifth in 50m back with a best-time finish of 12th in 100 breast.

Loni Unser took a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 50m and 200m back, and seventh in the 1500-meter free.

Lisa Hart had two finishes in the top 16, placing 11th in the 50m fly and 14th in 50m breast.

In Women’s 13-14, Katherine Lemma scored five events in the top five. She won 50m breast with teammate Danielle Doerflein placing ninth in 50m back.

In Men’s 13-14, Mason Johnson had four finishes in the top eight, with best times fifth in the 50m back and sixth in the 200m back. Teammate Nyle Prabowo took fifth in the 50m breast, followed by an eighth place in 100m breast.

In Women’s 11-12, Faye Prekeges broke into the top eight with sixth in the 50m fly, while teammate Petra Glenn just missed a top-eight finish in the 200m free, finishing ninth.

In Men’s 11-12, Zach Deal had a breakout long-course meet finishing in the top eight in all eight of his races. He scored third in the 50m and 200m free and 50m breast.

In Women’s 9-10, Maggie Deal raced to her best-ever finish in 100m breast, in 20th.

Gallagher plans to take the entire 5B squad on the road June 28-30 to Nevada for Elko’s High Altitude Invitational.
