Sign-up deadline Friday for Gates golf

Father?s Day tourney at Sun Valley

Registration deadline is Friday, June 7 for the 16th annual Chuck Gates Memorial golf tournament to raise money for junior golf in the valley.

“Tee it high and let it fly,” was Gates’ motto. That’s what up to 30 foursomes will do on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16 at 1:30 p.m. Sun Valley Golf Course with a best-ball scramble format.

Cost for 18 holes of golf, cart, buffet and tee prizes is $150 per person or $85 for Sun Valley Club members. The event will be played on nine holes of the White Cloud Golf Course and nine holes of the Trail Creek Golf Course.

Raffle grand prize is a Taylor Made R-1 driver valued at $500. Raffle tickets ($5 each, 5 for $20) will be sold at the tournament, and are available beforehand from local junior golfers. You don’t have to be present to win.

This year’s tournament is dedicated to the memory of Rafer Lutz, a local junior golfer who went on to play in college. Lutz, 42, died May 23, 2012 of melanoma. The father of two was chair and associate professor of health, human performance and recreation at Baylor University’s School of Education in Texas.

Lutz grew up in Sun Valley, attended prep school in Pebble Beach, Ca. and graduated from the University of Washington in 1993. At Washington, Lutz was an All-American Scholar on the golf team and qualified for the USGA amateur championship.

Previous Gates tournaments have been dedicated to Bill Butterfield in 2005, Bob Doyle in 2008, Mary Lou Simpson in 2009, Doyle Corbett in 2010, Tim Appleton in 2011 and Woody Stuart in 2012.

This year’s event includes for the fourth year the Chuck Gates Junior Putting Contest starting June 16 at 11 a.m. at Sun Valley Golf Course. It is free, all ages welcome. In addition, there will be a long drive exhibition with Pat Woodbrey.

A portion of tournament proceeds also support the 10th annual Chuck Gates Junior golf tournament Friday, June 28 at Bigwood Golf Course, according to Chuck Gates Youth Golf Endowment board president Roger Roland.

Other board members are Mike Pirzynski, Larry Vallon and Tucker Gates. The Advisory Board includes Alysia May, Bob Dunn and Bill Gehrke.

Call Pirzynski 720-4301 to sign up, or email Roger Roland at Tee sponsors and prize donors are welcome. For details about the putting contest call John Kearney Jr. at 726-7820.

The tournament is named for Chuck “C” Gates, who died Dec. 6, 1997 in Nevada at the age of 51. A passionate golfer, Gates started Ketchum’s first radio station, KRMR, and was a co-founder of the Idaho Mountain Express newspaper.
