The first day of June turned into a beautiful morning for the ninth edition of the Sun Valley Half Marathon, now sponsored by the Wood River YMCA.

A record field of 283 foot-racers enjoyed the 13.1-mile half marathon along with 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) and 5k (3.1-mile) races that started and finished on the lawn next to the Sun Valley Resort Pavilion.

Founded here in 2005 as a Memorial Day weekend outing, the Half Marathon has become one of the most popular outings at its distance in the Gem State. There were 224 half marathoners in 2010, 263 in 2011, 208 last year and 215 this year.

For the first time since 2009, the event offered shorter distances and 68 runners toed the line for the 10k and 5k races.

Boise runner Michael Lutz, 26, paced 69 male half marathoners in 1.23:36 followed by Tory Kendrick, 37, of Missoula, Mt. in 1.26:08 and 44-year-old Tom Dehart of Hailey, 1.27:27.

Shannon Deboer, 26, of Boise (1.33:57) clipped 3:37 off her winning time from last year and was sixth overall to lead 146 women over 13.1 miles. Next fastest: Dana Snell, 18, of Meridian 1.36:25 and Jena Greaser, 27, of Ketchum 1.38:10.

Winning the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run among 33 finishers were local footracers Pedro Morales, 23, in 35:17 and Lili Hansen, 25, in 48:35.

The 5k victories belonged to two 13-year-olds—Ketchum’s Irving Gonzalez in 25:52 and Tait Bjornsen of Wilson, Wyo. in 27:23. There were 35 finishers in the 3.1-mile race.

Next year’s Sun Valley Half Marathon is June 7, 2014.
