SkyWest scare ends without incident

Incoming flight reported smoke smell in cockpit

By GREGORY FOLEY
Express Staff Writer

Twenty-four people aboard a SkyWest Airlines flight from Salt Lake City to Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey endured a brief scare Saturday but were ultimately brought safely to their destination.
Pete Kramer, emergency services and airfield operations chief at Friedman, said the pilots of the Embraer 120 turboprop called into Friedman from about 25 miles south of the airport to report that they had detected “slight smoke in the cockpit.” Kramer said the flight continued its descent and landed safely at Friedman around 6 p.m.
Emergency responders deployed to the airstrip but no immediate danger was detected. Kramer said the airplane stayed at Friedman overnight and was flown back to Salt Lake City the next day without passengers aboard.
The count of 24 people on the flight includes the crew, Kramer said, which usually includes two pilots and one cabin crew.
“They detected a smell of smoke,” Kramer said. “Fortunately, it was not serious.”
